Calling all food pantry, feeding site, community agency, or garden programs in Illinois! Illinois Harvest of the Month has created a program extension kit to reach across your community. Check out the many ways to partner and share this wonderful program!
Growing Food indoors
Did you know you can grow food indoors without expensive growing kits? It’s true! Windowsill gardening and growing from cuttings or food waste like the root end of a celery bunch, or sprouted cloves of garlic, do not require expensive kits or equipment. A sunny window, water and good soil are all you need to teach kids how to grow food during the winter, and summer season. Lesson plans, activities for all ages including early childcare are available from online organizations and Illinois agencies. Connecting garden lessons and Harvest of the Month education to families at home can be as simple as growing pea shoots in a milk container!
Community Garden and Urban Farm connect
Are you a community garden or child garden program in Illinois? Share resources, activities, and simple techniques to grow food at home, in and outdoors. Connect your families to a local farmers market, or urban farm by sharing education and information about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares available in your community. Share information for EBT purchases at the at your community farmers market to connect your families to local food. Use Harvest at Home resources to create a deeper connection to health food across your community.
Growing Food OUTDOORS
Community gardens, home gardens, and school gardens create a space for healthy food in the community. Teaching kids how to grow food, and why home-grown food tastes better and is healthier for them is a perfect platform to provide better good food access in your community. Harvest at Home provides information on growing in different conditions and tips for success.
Food Pantry Connect
Help your clients to understand and enjoy local, fresh foods by sharing healthy recipes, creating cooking demos, and providing information on local produce donated, or gleaned from farms in your area. Sharing Harvest of the Month home recipes, Fun Fact Friday education, and Harvest at Home cooking, recipes, and quick preserving food resources to encourage healthier eating.
